If you see a couple taking off their clothes to enter the sea in New Brighton in freezing conditions, don’t be alarmed! For the past 9 months, Wirral coffee shop owner Adam Rowan and his partner Siân Evans have been taking a dip in the Irish Sea every day in order to raise money for local charities.

Adam, who owns The Sea Shanty opposite New Brighton train station, began taking the daily dips with Siân on 1st January 2020 as part of their ‘365 Dip Charity Challenge’ and have raised over £1,600 so far. Braving some harsh conditions earlier in the year, they have successfully completed over 280 dips so far and they are now bracing themselves for a difficult last few dips of the year as the weather gets colder.

Adam told us: “We do a lot of community work at The Sea Shanty and have raised thousands for charity since opening over 2 years ago. It’s part of our ethos and why we opened the café. We wanted to do something different and as I am an open water swimmer we thought this type of thing would be great to draw attention and encourage people to donate.”

He continued: “We’ve been posting every daily dip on Facebook and the feedback has been great so far. We’ve raised over £1,600 for charities but our aim is to reach £5,000. We’re really passionate about raising money for charity and helping the local community and this way we can do something we love in the process.”

Adam’s girlfriend, Siân, told us: “Taking a dip in freezing water is a great way to start the day and it puts you in a great mood for the rest of the day. It makes you feel really refreshed and it certainly wakes you up! Of course, there are days when you don’t feel like doing it but having two of us means we spur each other on.”

Taking a dip or swimming in the sea is becoming more and more popular, with a growing number of local groups taking to The Irish Sea or New Brighton’s Marine Lake. That said, it is only recommended for strong swimmers and those who know what they’re doing as it can be very dangerous.

Adam told us: “I have years of experience in open water swimming and surfing and it’s something you need extensive training to do. Once you’re able enough, there’s no better feeling than getting out into the sea. During the summer months we’ve stayed in the water for longer and we even got close to a seal on one occasion. To go for dips you just need confidence and once you get used yo it you love it!”

Adam and Siân have done lots for charity via The Sea Shanty these past couple of years, including giving money to the homeless and those in need, donating to The Millennium Gorse and New Brighton In Bloom and other great causes. This challenge, however, is without doubt their most impressive achievement yet.

Adam told us: “We’re preparing ourselves for a difficult last few months of the year. It can get very cold out there and the water and conditions will be tough. Getting in the water first thing in the morning when it’s bitter and raining is no easy task but we’ve come this far and we must complete it. If anyone can donate and help us help the lonely people in our community we’d really appreciate it.”
