In recent years, conversations around mental health have begun to move beyond traditional clinical settings. More people are recognising that wellbeing can be supported not only through counselling rooms and medication, but also through movement, connection and community. Mersey Mind Project has been offering Football Therapy sessions and this latest concept involves cycling.

Cycling Therapy is about creating a safe, supportive space where people can improve both their mental and physical wellbeing through riding. Merseyside offers some incredible cycling routes — from the Wirral Way to Chester canal to the Liverpool Loop Line. Sessions are designed to meet people where they are, regardless of skill level or experience, and it’s a chance to meet new people along the journey.

For many people struggling with anxiety, depression, loneliness, or stress, even taking a first step into a support group can feel overwhelming. A bike ride offers something different — movement without pressure, conversation without confrontation, and support without stigma.

Mersey Mind Project’s Chris Guy said: “The connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing is well established, but cycling offers some unique benefits. The rhythmic, repetitive motion of cycling can have a calming effect on the nervous system. Combined with fresh air and natural surroundings, riding can help quiet racing thoughts and reduce feelings of overwhelm.”

He continued: “For many people, movement helps process difficult emotions. A ride can provide space to think, reflect and decompress. Group rides provide opportunities for conversation, camaraderie and shared experience, often making it easier for people to open up naturally. Our free Football Therapy and Fitness Boot Camp session have been really successful, and we’re delighted to be adding another offering for local men.”

Cycling offers an alternative route into support. Rather than sitting face-to-face in a formal setting, people can connect side-by-side while riding. For many, this makes conversations feel more natural. This approach aligns with the wider mission of Mersey Mind Project to challenge stigma, tackle loneliness, and offer practical, community-based support.
