Chantelle Scott, 21, from Liverpool’s multi-award winning Star Salon recently won Silver at Goldwell’s Global Creative Awards for her stunning colour and style, very much against the odds.

Chantelle’s recent achievement is a far cry from the shy and misguided teen she once was. Her recent award involved working with top stylist Neil Barton, creating a colour and style for a model and attending a big awards ceremony in London — something she could have never imagined only a couple of years ago.

Chantelle explained: “In school I was always told I wasn’t clever enough and didn’t pay enough attention. My friend went to hairdressing college so I decided to give it a go too but I feel like it was looked down upon as a career choice. I was told I’d never make it. I started college but it wasn’t easy breaking into the industry as I found it a little toxic.”

As part of her college education, Chantelle had various placements at salons but struggled to fit in, struggled to learn and felt like she was an apprentice with no future. Disillusioned and desperate, she reached out to Star Salon — a multi award winning South Liverpool Salon — and the rest, as they say, is history.

Star Salon owner Kelly Macdonald said: “When Chantelle applied for a trainee role at 18 she was shy but I saw something in her. At Star Salon we’re big on training, in fact we close the salon every Wednesday for training, so if I can see something in someone I’ll consider them for who they are.”
She continued: “I’m not going to lie — it’s taken a lot of work with Chantelle, sometimes not paying attention or not coming in on Saturdays, but to see her today and to see the amazing young woman and stylist she has become is amazing!”

An outcast who could’ve quite easily gone down the wrong path, Chantelle has flourished under the guidance of Kelly at Star Salon. From not paying attention and not fitting in, she has now excelled to the point of being recognised as one of the best colourists and stylists in the country.
Chantelle said: “Basically I was a college reject who just did the rubbish tasks at salons. I reached out to Kelly and never thought I’d get a job at Star Salon but it’s the best thing I ever did. Kelly has given me so much training and support — she really has got my back — and even though it’s tough love sometimes I really appreciate it.”

After thorough training and mentoring, as well as a bit of tough love, Chantelle came into her own and soon became a Senior Stylist — creating some mesmerising new looks for clients. When Kelly put her forward for both the KMS Ambassador Programme and the Goldwell Creative Awards, she was at first reluctant but soon excelled.

Chantelle explained: “I’ve always been quite shy and thought of myself as a bit of an underdog so to put myself forward like this was way out of my comfort zone. Going to London to colour and style a model whilst being assessed and having a photo shoot at Kao Studios was like a whirlwind but then to attend the huge ceremony and win Silver nationally was unbelievable!”

Chantelle summarised: “Honestly if it wasn’t for Kelly and Star Salon I don’t know where I would be now. It just goes to show, all you need is the right training and guidance and you can succeed. Most importantly, I’ve had someone who has believed in me and invested in me — something that’s lacking in an industry that can be quite clicky and bitchy.”
