Having just celebrated their 30th birthday, Gerald House have a heart warming history. With an amazing track record of caring for a range of people with dementia, alzheimers, substance abuse, learning disabilities and age related issues, they’ve excelled at what they do for so long for a few reasons….

Their Ethos
Their EthosAt Gerald House they’re all about having the right staff. Owner Kamini Shone told LVL: “We only use our own staff rather than agency staff and that gives great reassurance to the residents and their families. It also provides familiarity to the residents — particularly important with sufferers of dementia. When we employ someone we make sure that first and foremost they are a good person with a kind heart — the rest can be taught.”
Gerald House is also about creating a good quality of life for its residence. Kamini explained: “We see Gerald House as a place people can come to live and enjoy a great quality of life. We make sure we give the highest level of care but also that the residents live a fulfilled life. We have plenty of activities such as swimming, the cinema and visits to art galleries and we’re flexible so we can tailor a care package to each resident.”

Their Experience
At Gerald House they have a team of 14 highly qualified staff who have all been there for years. At Gerald House they employ the right people and treat them well, the staff stay and therefore the residents are familiar with the carers and have a great relationship with them.
Most of the carers there have mental health experience including dementia and experience in end of life training in addition to NVQs in health and social care up to level 5. One thing for sure is residents are in the right hands!

Their Excellence
Gerald House have a good rating from the Care Quality Commission despite the assessments being very thorough these days. They have NHS awards such as a Certificate In End Of Life and Gold Standard in Flu Vaccinations.
They also have a 5 star food hygiene rating, serving quality home cooked food on a varied menu. They can tailor to allergies and different preferences too. The great thing about Gerald House is that although the quality of care is extremely high from experienced staff, the price isn’t! They don’t charge more for private clients either.

What The Residents Say….
During our visit one resident told us: “The girls here are beautiful people, it’s really fantastic. It’s a great place to be and there’s plenty to do. I recently went to Blackpool as we can have assisted days out and overnight trips if we like. We often have visits from youth groups and entertainers and Christmas is always nice here. What they do here is magic.”

What The Families Say….
The team at Gerald House have a great relationship with the families and offer them 24 hour communication with Managers. There are plenty of top references available and one family said in a card: “A massive thank you for taking such great care of Mum. It was a comfort to know over the last few years that she was in kind, caring hands and being really well looked after.”

Why we love Gerald House….
To succeed for 30 years in care is an amazing achievement and an inspiration. The reason for their success and why we love them is because of their attitude and ethos — employing good, decent staff who are in it for the right reasons and therefore stay for a long time.
We love the homely feel and the small, talented team with easy to access Managers. We love their years of experience maintaining high quality levels of care — tailoring care packages to suit each resident and giving them flexibility to live a full life.
A well deserved Happy 30th Birthday to the Shone family and everyone at Gerald House! Of the forthcoming birthday, Kamini told us: “It’s been a fantastic journey these past 30 years but of course it’s been hard work. We’re very proud of our work and our amazing staff and we look forward to another 30 years here.”
