With the pandemic having been extremely challenging, there’s no doubt that children have suffered mentally, emotionally and spiritually. One of the people who have been trying to bridge the gap is Katie Scott from Little Sunshine Mindfulness & Yoga. Here we talk to her about the powerful benefits of mindfulness, meditation and yoga on children during the pandemic and why she’s now campaigning for them to be part of the curriculum.

After 25 years of working in education, Katie quit her job as a teacher in 2016 to create Little Sunshine Mindfulness & Yoga. Realising the power of mindfulness, meditation and yoga and the positive impact it has on children, she set out to improve children’s wellbeing and has since worked with countless schools, universities and charities to deliver classes and projects.

During the pandemic, whilst schools have been closed, Katie has been offering online classes for children to help them through these challenging times. Katie has been delivering hourly sessions that include breathing exercises, yoga, meditation and work on self esteem, resilience, anger and emotions. A fully qualified expert in child development and wellbeing, Katie has provided a vital service despite not being able to deliver her classes in schools.

With schools now re-opening, Katie is back teaching mindfulness, meditation and yoga to children in schools. The fun, engaging and interactive sessions have proven to be a big hit with both children and teachers during the past few years, with more and more schools integrating them into the curriculum.

During her time working with schools, Katie has seen some incredible results — especially with children who have additional needs. With mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing something that’s fundamentally lacking in today’s society, Katie gives young people the tools required to combat many modern day issues.

Studies have shown that mindfulness, meditation and yoga can all help children with things such as stress, emotions and focus. Well conducted mindfulness interventions have been shown to be capable of addressing the problems of the young people who take part — improving their wellbeing, reduce worries, anxiety, distress,  reactivity and bad behaviour, improve sleep, self esteem, and bring about greater calmness, relaxation and self-‐regulation and awareness.

Katie told us: “I spent many years in education and when I discovered the powers of yoga, meditation and mindfulness I couldn’t believe they weren’t part of the curriculum. The education system teaches children great things however many children grow up mentally, emotionally and spiritually malnourished. I saw this as a massive gap so decided to make it my mission to fill it.”

She continued: “The past four years with Little Sunshine Mindfulness & Yoga have been amazing and I’ve had the pleasure of working with many children in many schools. I work with the teachers too — after all, they are the ones responsible for helping our children develop on a daily basis. The results and feedback I’ve had from the children, teachers and parents has been incredible and I’m hoping to roll this out nationwide.”

Of her sessions, Katie said: “My sessions aim to be fun, engaging and interactive but they are also very effective and many parents tell me they see some really positive changes in their children. I take a holistic approach — building in breath work, yoga, meditation, mindfulness and activities that connect with the emotions. I love what I do and I cannot state enough how powerful these tools are for children and their wellbeing.”

Katie also works with adults and charities, teaching mindfulness, meditation, yoga and self love on a 1-2-1 basis via an 8 week programme. Katie delivers CPD mindfulness workshops for teachers to support staff well-being and deliver strategies to use in the classroom and has also just released a book entitled ‘Taking Worry Out Of The Classroom’ that’s available to purchase via her website.

Katie summarised: “This past year has been very restrictive so I’ve been trying to help children via Zoom, but now that schools have re-opened I’m going to continue to show teachers and parents the amazing benefits so that hopefully mindfulness, meditation, yoga will be part of the curriculum nationwide. With many children having been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are more important than ever.”
