A multidisciplinary artist and curator, Fai McCabe has built a reputation for transforming the iconic Rubik’s Cube into a sophisticated artistic medium, creating large-scale works that blend optical illusion, portraiture and audience interaction. Her innovative approach has earned her recognition as one of the world’s leading female Rubik’s Cube artists, with exhibitions spanning the UK, Europe and beyond.

On a local level, she has amazed art lovers with her Rubik’s cube takes on The Liver Building, John Lennon and other iconic people and buildings, yet soon began to attract attention globally. After winning 1st Place Critics Award in Milan last year, she returned to the city this spring, representing Liverpool at Milan Design Week 2026, one of the world’s most influential celebrations of contemporary design and creativity.

The city-wide event attracts artists, designers and cultural innovators from across the globe, transforming Milan into a showcase of international talent. Exhibited at Arte Media Gallery, McCabe unveiled her latest masterpiece, Venus Perceived — an extraordinary optical illusion artwork composed of 600 Rubik’s Cubes. Reinterpreting Sandro Botticelli’s iconic The Birth of Venus, the work explores the relationship between colour, structure and perception.

Each individual cube has been painstakingly rotated and solved by hand, creating a precisely engineered composition that shifts dramatically depending on how it is viewed. At close range, the artwork dissolves into a fragmented landscape of colours, patterns and geometric forms. Step back, however, and the image of Venus gradually emerges, unified and recognisable.

The illusion is not painted onto the surface but instead constructed within the mind of the viewer. Adding another layer to the experience, the image resolves even more quickly when viewed through a smartphone camera, intensifying the illusion and revealing the composition in its entirety. Through this process, Venus Perceived invites audiences to question how images are formed, how perception works, and how much of what we see is actively constructed by our own minds.

The work received an enthusiastic response from visitors throughout the exhibition, further cementing Fai’s reputation for creating immersive and thought-provoking artworks. Following her success in Milan, she travelled to Venice where she presented the second work in the series, Algorithm of Venus, at the historic Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello as part of Rituals for the Biennale, an international collective exhibition bringing together contemporary artists from around the world.

In Algorithm of Venus, Fai reconstructs the central figure from The Birth of Venus through a complex system of cube-based algorithms. Rather than presenting the image directly, the artwork gradually reveals itself through movement and observation. As viewers change position, recognition emerges from abstraction, creating a constantly shifting experience that balances familiarity with uncertainty. The piece continues Fai’s fascination with perception, transforming the act of viewing into an active process rather than a passive one.

Her international momentum shows no sign of slowing down. This summer, she will exhibit at Art World Marbella, showcasing two of her most celebrated Rubik’s Cube interpretations: Mona Lisa and Salvador Dalí. Both works demonstrate the remarkable precision and technical mastery that have become hallmarks of her practice, reimagining some of history’s most recognisable faces through thousands of carefully manipulated coloured squares.

Fai said: “I have always loved colours and puzzles and alongside being an artist I am a chess teacher. Three years ago I decided to experiment in ‘Rubik’s Cubism’ — moving away from traditional art and fusing my love of puzzles and colours with alternative, abstract art. It’s been an amazing journey that has taken me to exhibitions across the globe and I feel so proud to be a Scouse girl representing Liverpool in this field.”

While her Rubik’s Cube creations have brought her international acclaim, Fai’s work extends far beyond the gallery space. Alongside her exhibition programme, she regularly undertakes commissioned Rubik’s Cube pieces and murals for businesses and private clients and delivers creative workshops for charities, sharing her passion for art, problem-solving and creative thinking with people of all ages.
