APPEAL TO HELP MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH HUB AFTER ELECTRICITY CUT OFF!
A men’s mental health hub in Liverpool is appealing for support after their landlord hit them with a £4,000 electricity bill. Inner Guru’s The Hub has helped hundreds of men since opening in March this year but is now closed without electricity after being cut off due to other tenants refused to contribute towards the bill.

The men’s mental health hub was opened to bridge the gap and provide early intervention and support to avoid crisis. An amazing £20,000 was raised to open the centre, with Founder Lewis Powell contributing an additional £7,000 of his own money, and since opening hundreds of men have benefitted.

The hub offers men a variety of activities and tools such as support groups, sharing circles, workshops and courses such as Macho Man Magic, PACT Mantality and The Four Elements. There’s even a sauna and cold water therapy available at the centre and it has had many supporters including Speedo Mick. Its future is now in jeopardy, however, due to a large bill that other tenants refuse to pay.

The CIC, based at 2 Parkinson Road in Walton, was awaiting an electricity bill from the landlord. When the bill finally arrived in July 2022, it was one bill for all of the tenants combined but as the other tenants refused to pay it meant that The Hub would need to pay the entire bill in order to avoid being cut off. This was not possible and unfortunately supply was cut off in September 2022.

Founder Lewis Powell said: “The whole process has been very stressful but the thing that’s most upsetting is that people have been missing out on support since we were cut off in October. Our job is to improve men’s mental health and avoid crisis and the dark, cold months and Christmas is when people need support the most. All these people are now missing out.”
He continued: “We’re only a small CIC and couldn’t afford the whole bill, although we were more than happy to pay our share. Now that we’ve been cut off we’re having to raise money for our own sole supply — including £2,450 for excavation work, electrical work and £650 rent for December. The landlord gave us 2 months rent free but it’s not good enough when you think of the people who will be missing out on support.”

The CIC is currently raising money for its own supply in order to open again in January 2023. There’s a GoFundMe where people can donate, a raffle taking place to win a number of fantastic prizes and a sleepover at Goodison Park supported by Everton In The Community.
The raffle costs just £5 per entry and some of the prizes on offer include holistic treatments, beauty treatments, a signed Jamie Carragher shirt, events, workshops and courses, vouchers, free driving lessons and more. Meanwhile, however, the clock is ticking and people are losing out on the services available.

Lewis said: “So many people were involved in opening this amazing place and it has changed many people’s lives so to have this situation is extremely frustrating. I’m angry with the electric company, the landlord, the estate agents and the other tenants for allowing this to happen. How could they have complete and utter disregard for mental health in such a way when suicide rates are on the rise?”
Rob Collier, who runs The Four Elements at The Hub, said: “As someone who attempted to take their own life, I can say that centres like this are vital to bridge the gap and this place certainly changed my life. I am now helping others voluntarily through my own courses and it really pains me that people are being denied access to them through the acts of others. It’s really unfair that we are in this position.”

Inner Guru’s The Hub is seeking help from anyone who is able to in order to connect their own electricity supply and meter and connect it all through a qualified electrician. There’s a GoFundMe, a raffle with top prizes and a Goodison Park sleepover to help the cause. Once it’s resolved, at least they will be in control of their own supply and won’t face being disconnected due to others.
