For the past three years, mental health nurse Aimee Greaves has been using holistic treatments as an effective tool for helping and healing mothers. Combining spirituality with science, Aimee set up Merseyside Mindful Mammas in 2018 and in this fascinating feature we talk to her about the benefits of holistic treatments for women who wish to conceive, women who are pregnant and mums of children of any age….

After suffering with her own mental health during pregnancy, Aimee discovered the powers of mindfulness, meditation and energy healing such as womb rites and went on to have a positive and empowering pregnancy, labour and birth of a healthy baby. Realising how much these things helped her, she created Merseyside Mindful Mammas in order to combine her 15 years experience as a psychiatric nurse with holistic treatments and has since seen some incredible results.

Merseyside Mindful Mammas offers hypnobirthing techniques, reiki, mindfulness, meditation, womb healing, women’s circles, closing the bones (specialised post natal massage), children’s and pre and post natal yoga, mother blessings (baby shower alternative), crystal healing and shamanic energy healing. She also offers Youth Mental Health First Aid courses.

Through one to one sessions or group work, Aimee helps women through pregnancy, post natal depression and during parenthood. In many cases, women who work with Aimee and do not wish to have a medical approach are able to heal themselves naturally.

Aimee explained: “After working as a mental health nurse for 15 years, of course I support science and medicine, but medicine is only really a temporary band aid. My work aims to work with women on a much deeper level and get to the very root of the problems. One of the key things I do is womb work as women can carry a lot of trauma and unwanted energy carried through the maternal ancestry line — this can result in difficulty conceiving as a parent.”

She continued: “I worked with one woman who couldn’t get pregnant for years and doctors couldn’t understand why. After working with her on mindfulness, meditation, reiki and then extensive womb work, we discovered she was holding lots of pain and trauma in her womb space — she then became pregnant and I worked closely with her throughout her pregnancy before she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.”

Aimee works closely with CAMHS (Children & Adult Mental Health Services) and notes that there is often up to a 12 months waiting list to be seen. Aimee’s work aims to bridge that gap and help both women and young people who are struggling. As well as offering Youth Mental Health First Aid courses and giving women the tools to see the signs of mental health issues for young people, she works with the young people too.

She explained: “In some cases I work with both the mother and the child. A combination of today’s high pressure society and also the pandemic of the last 12 months has seen a great rise in mental health issues amongst young people. I’ve had mothers with 6 and 7 year olds who are saying they don’t want to be here any more and teenagers trying to take their own lives.”

She continued: “If anyone is struggling through pregnancy or as a parent I am open for a free chat and consultation. We can then establish what the potential issues are and what healing services may be of help. There’s a strong link between a mother’s mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing and a child’s healthy development — my aim is to help women to help themselves and in turn help their children be as healthy and happy as possible.”

Aimee helps women connect with themselves and love themselves and teaches women to embrace their menstrual cycle and listen to their body. She is also a believer in natural births and allowing women to decide for themselves when it comes to giving birth — with her child being born weeks overdue.

Aimee said: “A child’s development starts from long before he or she is born so it is vital that a woman takes care of herself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually both throughout the pregnancy but also as a parent thereafter. Things such as mindfulness, meditation, reiki, massage, shamanic healing, sharing and healing circles and womb work can have profound effects and I’d recommend them to any woman.”
