Wirral’s annual charity kayak event is back and is on course to be the biggest and best event yet! On Sunday 4th July 2021 an anticipated record number of fundraisers will set sail from The Derby Pool in New Brighton — and, for the first time ever, they’ll be joined by members of Peninsula Community Paddlers and other SUP enthusiasts from around the Merseyside region, with Strawberry Moon Cafe also involved.

Wirral Kayak Challenge is in its 8th year and has raised over £40,000 for charitable causes. The unique concept of Mike Dudley encourages people to raise money for charity by paddling from New Brighton to Thurstaston via Hilbre Island. The last event in 2019 was the most successful — raising over £8,000 for charity — but 2021 is expected to surpass that and reach the incredible £50k milestone.

This year’s event has already seen over 60 entrants register, with 24th June the deadline to get involved, and this will be increased even further with the addition of the Stand Up Paddlers. Peninsula Community Paddlers have joined forces with the epic annual event, bringing the ever growing paddle boarding community to the charitable extravaganza.

The aim of this year’s event is to raise £10,000 and reach the £50k target by bringing together a record number of kayak and paddle board fundraisers. After an epic voyage from New Brighton, the fundraising paddlers will reach their final destination in Thurstaston — with a family day and top live entertainment at Dee Sailing Club and Strawberry Moon Cafe. Acts include the likes of The Shed Bros, Mule Train and Gary Murphy.

Wirral Kayak Challenge Organiser, Mike Dudley, told us: “It’s been amazing to see this event grow year on year but I really believe that this year will be the biggest and best yet! Joining forces with the ever growing paddle board community and having Strawberry Moon Cafe on board is a big boost and New Brighton Radio are also covering the event. With everything that’s happened in the last 12 months, it’s more important than ever.”

Peninsula Community Paddlers Co-Founder, Dan Cavanagh, said: “Stand Up Paddling is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and people are starting to appreciate the mental health benefits of being on the water. It makes complete sense for our paddle board community to support the great work of Wirral Kayak Challenge and become part of their fantastic charitable mission. We’re honoured to be involved.”

Registration for both kayak and paddle board entrants is every Thursday from 7.30pm at The Railway Inn, Meols, and the registration fee is £30. This year’s beneficiaries are Claire House and Merseyside Blood Bikes and any money raised by the participants will be donated fully to the two great causes.

Organiser Mike Dudley summarised: “There’s no event like this in the world and it keeps on getting bigger and better every year. People taking to the water and raising lots of money for charity in the process is a really unique thing and it’s been great to see it grow. With the help of the paddle board community, this year could be a ground breaking one for our annual event.”
